The U.S. Travel Association has announced that travel is continuing to outperform the rest of the American economy. The travel industry now employs eight million in this country, with 2,100 new travel jobs added in April. Since losing nearly half a million jobs in the Great Recession, the travel industry has added 697,000 jobs, outpacing job creation in the rest of the economy by 49%.
In Wisconsin, tourism numbers have been strong as well. In 2013, direct visitor spending in Winnebago County was up by 5.59%, topping $219 million. Tourism now supports 4,761 jobs in the county and brings in nearly $29 million in state and local taxes.
People are traveling, and the Oshkosh economy is definitely benefiting as a result.
