ABOUT

The Allen Priebe Gallery’s mission is to provide art exhibitions of high national and international distinction in order that the students and faculty of the UW Oshkosh Art Department may be enriched with and educated in the contemporary culture of the visual arts. The Gallery reaches out and brings our students and community indispensable, firsthand experience of great world art with the goal of sharing relevant visual culture with the university community and regional communities. The Priebe Gallery’s exhibitions are chosen by a board of students, primarily Art Department students, with counsel and guidance from a faculty director/advisor. Exhibitions are physically installed in the gallery by the faculty director/advisor and their class of Exhibition Design students. Students are thus involved in the Priebe Gallery on every level. Solo exhibitions for artists from a multiplicity of artistic philosophies are hosted regularly. These artists represent diverse places, ethnic/cultural backgrounds and perspectives; genders and ages. In addition to hosting solo exhibitions, the Priebe Gallery hosts numerous group and theme exhibitions as well. Artists who exhibit at the Priebe Gallery routinely visit our campus and perform 2-3 day workshops/residencies for our Art Department students, through lectures and critiques, in order that our students gain access to fresh and distinct artistic viewpoints. In addition, as part of the Visiting Artist Program each artist is involved in a Gallery Walk and Artist Reception, both of which are open to the student body at large. The Gallery opened in 1971 in the newly-completed Arts and Communication Center on the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh campus. The gallery is named in memory of Allen Priebe, a member of the UW Oshkosh art faculty and teacher at the Rose Swart Campus School until his death in 1965.
