Oshkosh, WI is known for its charming downtown, waterfront beauty, and deep historical roots. One of the city’s hidden gems is The Doe House, a historic bed-and-breakfast offering guests an unforgettable stay steeped in history and modern comfort.

When booking places to stay during my husband’s and my travels, I try to pick boutique establishments with an interesting historical or architectural background.  The Doe House fits both those desires and is a beautiful place to stay.

Constructed in 1869 in the Italianate style, The Doe House was the first residential property designed by renowned Wisconsin architect William Waters.  The home was originally built for William Harvey Doe, the great-great-great grandfather of the current proprietors, Becky and Paul, who purchased the property in 2018 to prevent its demolition and to preserve its historical significance.

Becky’s great-great grandma, Cornelia Doe, married a local businessman by the name of Rufus Brown in the ballroom sized living room. Rufus was involved in the family business, Cook and Brown Lime Company, and was believed to have met with the Oshkosh alderman in The Doe House after the fifth great Oshkosh fire where it was decided to rebuild Oshkosh with brick instead of lumber.

Today, The Doe House stands as a testament to Oshkosh’s rich architectural heritage, offering guests a unique glimpse into the past while enjoying luxurious accommodations.

Accommodations at The Doe House

Guests at The Doe House can enjoy the entire Victorian mansion, which features four private bedrooms and one semi-private room, each thoughtfully named after members of the Doe family:

  • Cornelia Doe Suite: A spacious room with elegant décor and modern comforts.  The room has a king bed and an ensuite bath with separate shower and clawfoot tub.
  • Rebecca Doe Suite: Combines historical ambiance with contemporary amenities containing a king bed and an ensuite bath.
  • Baby Doe Suite: Offers a cozy and intimate setting for guests with a queen bed, sofa sleeper and full bathroom including a steam shower.
  • Harvey Doe Bedroom: Features classic design elements and a comfortable atmosphere. This room has a full bed and a shared bath.
  • Flora Doe Sunporch: A semi-private space with abundant natural light, perfect for relaxation.  The couch pulls out into an additional bed.

Ideal for families or a group of friends, the entire Victorian property can be booked and can accommodate up to 12 guests.

The mansion boasts two luxurious steam showers, two laundry facilities, and well-appointed dining areas. The kitchen is equipped with modern appliances, including a large wine fridge cleverly installed in the space formerly occupied by a historic dumbwaiter.  You’ll find a nod to the home’s history in the kitchen where the backsplash is made of bricks from the Cook and Brown Lime Co.

Each room includes plush bedding, modern bathrooms and thoughtful touches to ensure a comfortable stay. Guests also have access to common areas such as a cozy reading nook, a parlor with a (non-working) fireplace, and an inviting dining room where a continental breakfast is served each morning. Coffee and tea are available all throughout the day.

Another fun fact about Oshkosh is that portions of the Johnny Depp movie Public Enemies was filmed here in 2008. Observant viewers will recognize scenes that include the Oshkosh Public Library as well as the 404 Building.

As a supporter of the arts, Becky and Paul offer an Artist in Residency program.  Artists and non-profits that meet certain criteria may qualify for a reduced rate.  Inquiries may be made at thedoehouse@gmail.com.

Why Stay at the Doe House?

The property is conveniently located in downtown Oshkosh within walking distance of the local YMCA, the Oshkosh Public library as well as many great restaurants. Two of my favorites are Gardina’s Wine Bar and Café and The Roxy Supper Club.  No visit to Wisconsin is complete without experiencing a true supper club and The Roxy does not disappoint.

The Doe House is more than just a place to stay, it’s an experience. With its blend of historic charm, modern comforts, and warm hospitality, it’s the perfect destination for travelers looking to immerse themselves in the beauty and history of Oshkosh. Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway, a weekend retreat, or a cultural adventure, the Doe House offers a memorable stay in the heart of Wisconsin.
