Welcome to Hudak in the City! In a nutshell, I am a sub-par blogger with a true love for food and fun in Oshkosh. Follow along monthly for updates on some of my favorite things to do, eat and drink in the greatest city in Wisconsin!
Gabes - 1160 N Westhaven Dr - Oshkosh, WI
Hudak & the City is back and we checked out my friend Steve’s place, Gabe’s! Locally owned and operated, Gabe’s Wisconsin Kitchen and Tavern was founded in 2019 by owner Steve Gabelbauer. Named after his father’s childhood nickname, Gabe’s took two famous Gabelbauer family recipes, Dad’s (Jim) Beer Can Chicken and Mom’s (MJ) Pot Roast and is sharing them with Oshkosh! These two dishes are used in many menu items to make Gabe’s a truly unique, scratch kitchen dining experience. (We may argue that the cheesecake is the best!!!) Read along to see our favorites and start making your list of things to try on your next visit!
Let's Talk Apps!
Looking for a unique appetizer to try? Look no further than Gabe’s. We tried two of their most popular and I have been thinking about them since! First up was the Fried Pickle Roll Ups- the Wisconsin classic with a twist! Ham, cream cheese, tortilla, pickles and served with spicy ranch- how can you go wrong?
Next we tried the Grand Champion Brat bites- and we rated them grand champion as well! Deep fried Miesfeld Brats served with their homemade honey dijon aioli, so good! I also highly recommend their house made BBQ, legendary!
Soup & Salad Bar
I am a sucker for a good soup and salad bar and Gabe’s new addition of theirs on Tuesday- Friday 11-2 will have us back often! Stocked with all of your favorites, the salad of your dreams is just a Gabe’s stop away! The two homemade soups they were serving up that day were the Chicken (hello Beer Can Chicken!) and Vegetable and the Broccoli Cheese- both fantastic!
Chicken, Fish, & More!
How could we go to Gabe’s and not try one of the things that they are known for? Their Beer Can Chicken wrap did not disappoint! Beer can chicken, bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheddar, and spicy ranch- all served in a tortilla!
Next up was their whitefish tacos and we couldn’t have loved them more! Blackened whitefish, red onion, pico de gallo, cilantro and their cajun remoulade- 42 stars!! We can’t wait to go back and try their Friday Fish fry!! Our waitress, Louisa, highly recommends the Beer Can Chicken Mac n Cheese, twist our arm, we will try that too! Looking to try Steve’s favorite menu item? His Mom’s favorite pot roast is the winner!
Dessert - Of Course!
We finished our meal with some of MJ’s famous cheesecake, Triple Berry and Twix. Wow, is all we can say! Steve’s Mom, Mary Jo, travels up from Beloit, MI to make her famous treats and the flavors are always changing! We hear she has hit over 100 flavors- crazy! (Call us when the Funfetti Cookie Dough is back) Teach us your secrets, Mary Jo! We loved it!!
This scratch kitchen in Oshkosh is such a great restaurant for our community! Not only are they serving up some great food, they support a ton of charities and local organizations. An all around absolutely fantastic restaurant and community that Steve and his team has built!
Follow their Facebook page as they are running specials weekly and have some of the best cocktails in town! Keto Wednesday sound like something you want to check out? Every Wednesday, Gabe’s creates a special that follows the criteria of a Keto diet. The specials all have less than 50 grams of carbs, high protein, moderate fat, and low sugar!
Thank you for having us, Gabe’s, we couldn't love your spot more!
