Welcome to Hudak & the City! In a nutshell, I am a sub-par blogger with a true love for food and fun in Oshkosh. Follow along monthly for updates on some of my favorite things to do, eat, and drink in the greatest city in Wisconsin!
La Baja
Hudak & the City is back for 2025 and we are kicking it off at La Baja! Located at 600 W 9th Ave, it is owned by the Carrillo Family! Alex could not have been more kind and helpful during our outing, we can’t wait to go back to see him! Alex and his family opened La Baja on January 24, 2024, and are coming up on their first anniversary. Their focus is on Tijuana-style food since Alex and all of his family are from the Tijuana, Baja California area and are striving to bring the authentic food that he learned to cook from his parents and share it with all of us. When we asked what their personal favorites were on the menu, he said anything in the Seafood section! He recently started doing a Seafood Taco of the week and will post it on their Facebook page! This week's taco special looks pretty delicious: Costa Azul and Culichis tacos- stop in to check them out! With a ton of specials happening throughout the week, their Taco Tuesday special is hard to pass up! (Three street tacos and two sides for $15- sign us up!)
Dips and Chips!
The real question is, is it even possible to go to a Mexican restaurant and not order all the dips as an appetizer? We started with their homemade guacamole, queso, and bean dip- all absolutely fantastic! Their chips are the perfect crunchy, salty mix and go perfectly with all of their dip options. With three salsa options, they truly have something for everyone! A mild verde salsa, medium red salsa, and a spicy habanero salsa- my personal favorite, the habanero! (Save some to add to your tacos, it is perfect!)
Onto my personal favorite of the day, the Pollo La Baja Nachos! A tray of their fantastic chips, topped with their grilled chicken marinated in their special adobo sauce, cilantro, onions, lettuce, pico de gallo, queso, sour cream, and cotija cheese! Honestly some of the best nachos I have ever had! You can also choose, asada or adobada for your meat!
Birriamen Bowl- you have to try it! A huge bowl of their slowly cooked beef, ramen, house spices, and garnished with sesame seeds, cilantro, onions, and radishes. Definitely a unique treat that you have to try! I recommend getting a Quesabirria on the side and dipping it in the ramen bowl- you will not regret it!
Taco Time!
A close second of the day for me is their fish tacos! Truly so fresh and tasty! I prefer them on flour tortillas and it comes with beer battered fish, cabbage, pico de gallo, and their special sour cream sauce. We got the two-taco combo that comes with two sides. The sides are your choice of rice, refried beans, charro beans, macaroni salad, and adobo potatoes. The refried beans and adobo potatoes won us over!
Known for their street tacos, we had to sample some additional to try them all! The Gobernador taco: Sauteed shrimp with onion, garlic, tomato, and poblano peppers served on a cripsy tortilla with melted cheese and topped with cabbage, pico de Gallo, and their sour cream sauce! SO so good.
We also sampled their asada, adobada (pork), and pollo street tacos! All are served topped with cilantro and red onion. We truly didn’t try anything we didn’t like!
Alex and his crew truly have something special at La Baja and we couldn’t be happier that they chose Oshkosh to put down some roots! Happy Birthday, La Baja and we will be in soon for some more delicious food!
Please check this place out and report back on your favorites, we can’t recommend it enough! Cheers, Oshkosh and happy eating!
