Placemaking

Oshkosh is ready for its best era yet. And the timing couldn’t be better! So many of the country’s most vibrant places have features in common with Oshkosh: higher density, pockets of commercial activity, rich cultural history, water for days, a strong university, diverse and friendly people, local businesses and products (chocolates!!), open land and vacant historic buildings in key districts, and so much more!

Discover Oshkosh is launching new placemaking efforts to leverage those assets through key projects. Our sweet spot is in projects that shift our culture in important ways, enhancing both the quality of life and the visitor experience here.

This page is dedicated to those projects, calls for art, and other ways to get involved.

Selection Committee

We have our selection committee for 2025 placemaking projects! Based on community enthusiasm for submitted project ideas, seven residents were selected to review this year's placemaking submissions. We will reopen the application in the future to provide opportunities for new community members to weigh in on these exciting community investments.

1,000-Foot Mural

Discover Oshkosh and Cummins are seeking a talented muralist or team of muralists to submit designs for what will become Wisconsin’s largest mural to date. This project will cover the river-facing back wall of the Cummin’s plant, which stretches 1,076 feet in total along the Oshkosh Riverwalk.

This project is an open call. Artists are encouraged to come up with their own concepts and designs but may want to consider both the location of the mural along the Fox River and the work that takes place inside this facility.

To be Installed on the south-facing wall of the 100 North Main building, this six-story mural will greet residents and visitors alike as they cross the Main Street bridge into downtown.
