Friend “dates” are always a good idea and it is easy to get stuck in the rut of meeting over coffee or a meal.

Lately, friend catch ups have involved “active” activities and experiences. They are offering an authentic way to catch up with one another and get some laughs in and make some different memories.

Recently a good friend and I set out on an early Sunday morning adventure to Originals Mall of Antiques in Oshkosh. She has a new home to decorate and we were looking for a few things that would help her vintage farmhouse aesthetic come to life. I was happy to say yes, as I’ve wanted to go antiquing, but the opportunity never presented itself other than being an idea for someday.

Originals Mall of Antiques thrift shop in Oshkosh, Wisconsin

On our outing to Originals Mall of Antiques the monthly flea market was taking place outside. Many of the outside vendors had very specific items available, and minus a white milk glass vase to add to my collection, we spent a good deal of time inside. We had the best time browsing through the different sections of the mall, talking about things that reminded us of our families and growing up. It was a fun way to do something very different with a good friend and walk away from the day feeling like I got to know her better. We both left behind treasures that we hope will be available the next time we decide to do some vintage shopping again.

If you are curious about the the summer flea market schedule, these are the upcoming dates:

  • Saturday, July 19; Saturday, August 16 (Rock, Gem and Mineral Show), Monday, September 1 and the last of the season is Saturday, October 18.

My advice for going thrifting: go with an open mind, have some ideas of what you might be looking for (and a budget), have a friend or two and embrace the experience. You never know what you might find.
