If you are looking to add a big experience to your summer date adventures, look no further than Oshkosh in July. While EAA AirVenture is famous as an aviation wonderland, it also doubles as a unique, thrilling, and romantic date spot to make core summer memories.

Make Plans for the Night Air Show

Mark and I were able to plan a weeknight date night for the Wednesday night air show. It was our first time experiencing a night air show on the grounds together, and also our first time experiencing the ‘best kept secret’ on the grounds, Pete’s West. As we were walking there, the Red Arrows flew directly overhead and painted the sky red, white and blue.

If you're not an Oshkosh local, you may not know that Pete's Garage is a dive bar in town known for its burgers and sarcastic service - located near the AirVenture grounds at 1514 Oregon St, Oshkosh.

We connected with our friend Pat, who loves Oshkosh as much as we do! (Check out his Oshkosh adventures here!) It was an awesome time playing tourist in our own town while exploring the aircraft, taking photos, and the fireworks experience was like no other. It will live in our memories for a long time to come.

EAA AirVenture Night Show on a Saturday Night in July 2025

If you are looking to make a date night at AirVenture happen, we’ve got some tips:

  • Explore the Exhibits and Technology: Arriving in the late afternoon allows you to explore the main exhibition hangars or the Innovation Showcase. Depending on the day, they can be less crowded in the late afternoon. You can try out advanced flight simulators, experience virtual reality exhibits, or check out futuristic tech together. It is interactive, fun, and gives you plenty to talk about.

  • Sunset Picnic on the Flight Line: Walk down to the flight line as the golden hour begins. Grab some classic Wisconsin cheese curds, local food truck specialties, or a couple of local craft beers at Pete’s West. Find a spot on the grass to relax, talk, and watch the sun go down over a field of historic aircraft.

  • The Night Airshow & Fireworks: This is the crown jewel of a Wednesday or Saturday evening. Find your spot on the flight line for a stunning twilight spectacle. Precision pilots dance through the dark with fireworks shooting off their wingtips, culminating in a massive wall-of-fire pyrotechnic display that will have you holding hands and looking up in awe. The show begins at 8:00 pm and lasts for about two hours.

Don't leave without capturing the memories. Here are a few of the best spots on the grounds for a great couples photo:

  • The Famous Brown Arch: This is the ultimate, iconic AirVenture landmark. Pose underneath it together with the bustling flight line stretched out in the background.

  • Boeing Plaza (Golden Hour): This central plaza hosts the largest and most dramatic aircraft at the show. Position yourselves under the wing of a massive military cargo plane or a sleek modern jet just as the sun goes down for incredible lighting.

  • The Vintage Aircraft Area (The Red Barn): For a more nostalgic, romantic vibe, head over to the vintage aircraft park. The beautifully restored propeller planes and the classic red barns look straight out of a 1940s romance movie.

A few more practical tips:

  • What to wear: Dress in comfortable, casual layers. You will do a lot of walking, so comfortable shoes are a must (this is not the time for the “cute” sandals). While it may be hot and humid, bring a light jacket or sweatshirt, as the open airfield cools down quickly once the sun sets.

  • What to pack: Bring a large, durable blanket or a pair of lightweight lawn chairs for the airshow and movie viewing. Don't forget bug spray for the evening and a small flashlight or fully charged phone to help navigate the dark paths after the fireworks.

  • How to get there: Use the official EAA public parking lots (like the Gray or Brown lots). Pin your car's location on your phone map if you do so you can easily find it in the dark. EAA also runs shuttles from places throughout Oshkosh. Check out their website for what’s available.

  • Stay hydrated: Bring a reusable water bottle. There are plenty of water filling stations across the grounds to keep you hydrated during the warm late-afternoon hours… although the A&W Root Beer float could be seen as an option as well. 

 

You don’t have to be an avid aircraft enthusiast to take in the world's largest aviation celebration at the "World's Busiest Airport”, there are plenty of really awesome things to do and see on the grounds and it happens right in your own backyard.
